Historic Main Street Walking Tour

Stroll through Minneapolis’s oldest neighborhood with a Mill City Museum guide, who will highlight the rich past and exciting future of historic Main Street. The tour will focus on life in the village of St. Anthony, changes along Main Street throughout the years, and such landmarks as the1855 Upton Block, 1858 Martin & Morrison Building, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Pillsbury A Mill and the Chalybeate Mineral Springs.

This tour will begin and end at Pracna Restaurant, 117 Main Street S.E.

Visitors are encouraged to visit Mill City Museum before or after the tour (museum admission included in the price of the tour). Fee: $12 adults, $10 seniors and college students, $8 children 6-17 and MHS members. Includes museum admission.

Tuesday June 16th, 2009 at 7:30 pm.

Several outstanding members are running for the board seats and we will
also accept nominations from the floor. Remember, to vote you must be a current  registered member. We will be checking picture ids to make sure you are who you say you are and you are also a current resident. If your picture id does not match your address, you may bring an original bill for utilities that includes your name, address in the neighborhood and has a due date of 30 days of election day. Students can also use a student photo id, along with registration or fee statement with current address.

We’ll also be giving out awards to members who have done great things for MHNA this year.

New Rental License Standard

The City Council has passed an ordinance requiring an inspection, along with a fee of $450, for all changes of ownership of rental dwellings.

Future Funding for Neighborhoods TIF Plan up for review and approval. The proposal to establish a new tax increment financing (TIF) district to help pay off Target Center debt  and fund neighborhood revitalization activities will be coming up for review, possible amendments and final approval this summer.

The Plan can be found at

The plan calls for a Consolidated Redevelopment TIF District to be established in accordance with the legislation many of us worked hard to get passed in 2008.  I am a strong supporter of the TIF district and believe that it is essential to future funding of neighborhood controlled planning and revitalization efforts.  I support funding Target Center debt relief, (which will lighten the load on property tax payers) and neighborhood revitalization equally and will fight hard to ensure the neighborhoods get their share. The
district will be comprised of all of the property currently located within 15 existing TIF districts that are due to terminate on August 1, 2009.  Maps and a list of parcels that are in the District are included in the TIF Plan.  The TIF Plan is being reviewed by the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, the Minneapolis Board of Education, the City Planning Commission, neighborhood organizations and other interested parties.

The official public hearing for this will likely be at the Community Development Committee on Tuesday, July 21 at 1:30 pm in Room 317 City Hall.

The City Council is expected to  consider the proposed plan on Friday, July 31, 2009.  The Council can approve, amend or reject the proposed plan.

Comments are due by noon July 20 to be part of the official record.
