Crime Update: May 5, 2008
Burglary Rape: SE Como / U of M Neighborhood
Facts: In the early morning hours of 05/04/2008, a 20-year-old female was confronted by a stranger inside her residence and sexually assaulted. The victim fled out a 2nd story window and ran to a neighbor’s house to report the assault. The victim sustained a broken ankle from the fall. Minneapolis Police are investigating.
The suspect is a white male, 5’9” – 6’, 18-25 years, medium build, dark hair, scruffy hair on face.
What you can do:
· Keep your doors and windows locked at all times.
· Check to make sure that door deadbolts are at least 1” long and have a maximum-security strike plate.
· Use window pins, track fillers, or additional locks to prevent windows from being opened more than 6”.
· Use only a first initial and last name on your mailbox and/or buzzer.
· Turn on outside lights and leave them on.
· Trim shrubs and trees so windows and doors are in full view from the street.
· Do not leave ladders and tools lying outside where burglars can use them to enter your home.
· Know your neighbors and watch out for one another.
· When you move into a new building, request that the lock/cylinder be changed so previous tenants cannot enter.
· Call 911 if you see suspicious activity (e.g., unfamiliar person lurking in your neighborhood) or the sounds of breaking glass.
