I-35W Bridge Update: May 28, 2008

I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi: May 28, 2008

Crews hang first pair of main-span segments on I-35W Bridge project On Sunday, crews began the main-span erection process, hanging the first pair on the northbound approach on the south side of the river. A large crowd was on hand to watch the placement from the 10th Avenue Bridge. Placement of the segments is a precise procedure involving hydraulic jacks and detailed surveying to have the segment within one-sixteenth of an inch of computer modeling. Crews wait several days before the next segment placement to allow time for the closure pour (between the main span segment and the approach span), concrete curing and post-tensioning work in preparation for the next segment placement. The next pair is expected to be erected mid-week this week.

Demolition work on north end of I-35W

Crews have begun demolition of the old road bed on the portion of I-35W at the north end of the casting yard (on the south side of the river). This work will involve the use of equipment to break up the old roadway so it can be rebuilt. As a result, significant thumping noise may occur. This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. and could last as long as four weeks.

The “Telling River Stories” Web site is now live at www.riverstories.umn.edu

Telling River Stories is a collaborative project that populates the urban Mississippi River corridor with stories of how the city and the river have been jointly developed. The site highlights stories about the people and places that make up today’s urban river landscape. In addition to the Web site, future programs and on-site installations will be part of the overall project. The Telling River Stories program is part of the River Life:

Mississippi and U project, a partnership of the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, Institute for Advanced Study, Water Resource Center, College of Design and Urban Studies Program. The River Life project connects University research, teaching and civic engagement programs with off-campus partners who are working to reinvigorate the urban Mississippi River. In the coming weeks, project team members will be adding materials to the site’s coverage of “river stories” in the Twin Cities, St. Louis and New Orleans. Check back often to view the progress.

Copper Wire Theft

Xcel Energy has currently been experiencing theft of copper ground wires from the power line poles that run through Minneapolis Alleys and streets. Individuals have been cutting the wires close to where the wires run into the ground and about as high as they can reach which usually gets them a 5-6 foot section of copper wire which are then turned into recycling centers for cash.

These cuts do not interrupt your power but they do pose a potential power interruption risk if a storm occurs.

If you see anyone appearing to be doing anything around the power poles in the alley and they do not have Xcel Energy ID, uniforms or vehicles, please call 911 with a description of the person (s) and vehicle information if possible.
